When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin--one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.
As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin--and his world--forever.
Sarah J. Maas has done it again folks. I mean seriously, is she even capable of writing a terrible book? The way she writes this book is so captivating and the cover is GORGEOUS. I mean come on! Every single book written by Sarah is such a brilliant and breath-taking adventure.
A Court of Thorns and Roses tells the story of Feyre, a huntress who lives with her family who are now in poverty. Feyre lives only miles away from a border that seperates the humans from the magical land, Prythin. Immortal and very powerful magical beings live beyond this border and are feared by humans. They are called Faes or Faeries and are broken up into different classes. For example, High Faes are the highest class. They're basically very dangerous gods in the eyes of humans.
As for Feyre, she absolutely despises the Fae and their magical abilities. While she is hunting to provide for her family, she spots a small deer, but she notices a large wolf lurking in the bushes as well. This frustrates Feyre and she waits, contemplating whether to kill wolf. For all she knows, it could be a Fae in disguise. She eventually kills the wolf and returns home with food and wolf skins. (Which is very beneficial for her family)
Later that night, a beast storms into her home, demanding payment for the Fae that she had slaughtered. She is given a choice to die with her family or to live out the rest of her life in Prythin. To save her family, Feyre agrees to leave with the beast and live with him. Once they arrive in the magical land, she notices that Prythin is not what she expected it to be. To her surprise, everything is covered with beauty.
The beast escorts her to a gorgeous manor. Here, the beast transforms into a man, dripping with beauty and magic. He introduces himself as Tamlin (Tam-lin) then introduces his emissary, Lucien. (Loo-Shien). Unfortunately, every Fae that is under Tamlin's command is cursed to wear mask's for the rest of their lives. Including Tamlin and Lucien. Feyre spends the nexts few months learning about the Fae, discovering hideous secrets, and getting to know the High Fae, Tamlin.
A Court of Thorns and Roses has a Beauty and the Beast feel to it. A young girl forced to live out in a manor with a beast, surrounded by cursed Faes. By now, you can guess that she's the only one who can lift the spell and yadyadyada. I will say that I was expecting it to be similar to the Disney adaption, but boy was I wrong. I loved how it strayed from the original story line of Beauty and the Beast.
This book was absolutely amazing. A Court of Thorns and Roses was so edgy and there was a lot of blood, but there were no fangirl worthy plot-twists. The relationships between Feyre and Tamlin though... Like... OHMAHGASH. I can't. I just can't. I didn't like Tamlin in the beginning, but the way their relationship bloomed made me fall in love with him. He's is now in the top five of my fictional boyfriend list.
One thing that irked me, was our main protagonist, Feyre. I just didn't like her as much as I loved the book. Personally, she was kind of whiny? I dunno. I did like her snide remarks and stubbornness though. It contributed to that edgy feel throughout the whole book.
The fact that this book is tied to the Throne of Glass (also written by Sarah) through the Faes was so COOL! There are magical beings that used to live happily, but were snuffed out in Throne of Glass. However, in Court of Thorns and Roses, the storyline takes place BEFORE Throne of Glass. I honestly didn't really care for the ending because I thought this book should be a stand alone. I love the fact that Court of Thorns and Roses will be a series, but I was expecting a happy ending, not a "To be continued" ending.
I am very excited to read and purchasde the sequel in this series! Honestly, I would enjoy reading any book written by Sarah. What do you think of this book? Do you like Sarah J. Maas and her writing. Tell me down below! I highly recommend this to any reader who loves an edgy and action-packed book. Hope you are all having a marvelous and cozy Fall. Happy Reading!
